Britain's Tom Pidcock has secured a stunning victory in stage three of the Tour of the Alps, showcasing incredible resilience just weeks after a harrowing high-speed crash in Spain.
The 26-year-old cyclist, riding for Pinarello-Q36.5, outpaced Italy's Tommaso Dati and Colombia's Egan Bernal in a thrilling sprint finish in Arco, northern Italy. Pidclock maintained his position at the front of the peloton before powering across the line in warm conditions, completing the stage in 4 hours, 23 minutes, and 24 seconds.
This triumph comes less than a month after Pidcock suffered what he described as a "horror crash" during March's Volta a Catalunya, where he misjudged a corner on a descent. The incident forced him off the bike and presented significant mental and physical challenges during his recovery.
"With my injury and the time off, it's been difficult," Pidcock revealed after his victory. "Coming back is very hard mentally - even the first time I was dropped, it was tough to deal with. So this win feels really nice."
Known in cycling circles as a 'demon descender' following his spectacular 2022 Tour de France stage win on Alpe d'Huez where he reached speeds of 100km/h, Pidcock reflected on the March crash: "It was like one of these horror crashes you see... I was lucky I could talk on the radio."
The double Olympic mountain bike champion had been enjoying a strong season before the accident, narrowly missing victory at the prestigious Milan-San Remo monument race to Tadej Pogacar.
Pidcock is using the Tour of the Alps as preparation for Sunday's monument race Liege-Bastogne-Liege, before embarking on his first Tour de France with the team he joined last year.
In other British cycling news, Ben Tulett expressed surprise at his third-place finish in La Fleche Wallonne, the traditional warm-up race for Liege-Bastogne-Liege. The 24-year-old Visma-Lease a Bike rider was narrowly beaten near the summit of the famous Mur de Huy climb by emerging French talent Paul Seixas of Decathlon CMA CGM, who claimed victory ahead of Switzerland's Mauro Schmid.
