Premier League's European Race Heats Up: Ten Clubs Still in Contention for Continental Football

The Premier League's battle for European qualification remains wide open, with ten clubs still mathematically in the running for continental football next season. While Liverpool's Champions League exit this week dashed hopes of a record eleven English teams in Europe, the possibility of ten remains very much alive.

England currently has four clubs still competing in European tournaments, with at least one guaranteed to reach the Europa League final. The final tally of English representatives will be determined by a combination of trophy successes and final league positions.

Recent changes to UEFA's qualification system have added complexity to the process. The introduction of European Performance Spots (EPS) awards additional Champions League places to the two leagues with the strongest overall performance each season. The Premier League has already secured one of these spots for the 2026-27 campaign, guaranteeing at least eight English clubs in European competition next year.

"The logic of the EPS is simple," explains the qualification framework. "But other factors complicate matters. It has two pillars: it is applied after all other considerations about domestic and European cup winners; it always provides one additional place to the overall allocation."

Under the current scenario, England's European qualification looks like this:

  • Fifth place secures Champions League football
  • Sixth place earns Europa League qualification
  • Seventh place enters the Conference League

The race for fifth position is particularly tight, with Liverpool currently holding that spot on 52 points. The Reds trail third-placed Manchester United and fourth-placed Aston Villa by just three points. However, with only six points separating Liverpool from tenth-placed Sunderland and six matches remaining, the battle for European positions promises to go down to the wire.

Should an English club win either the Champions League or Europa League, additional qualification scenarios could come into play, potentially allowing for six Premier League teams in the Champions League once again. The final weeks of the season will determine whether the Premier League can achieve the remarkable feat of sending ten clubs into European competition.
