Prosecutors Seek to Block Arson Suspect's Attempt to Shift Blame to Firefighters in Palisades Wildfire Case

Prosecutors are urging a judge to prevent the man accused of igniting the devastating Pacific Palisades wildfire from shifting blame onto firefighters during his upcoming trial.

Jonathan Rinderknecht, who faces charges for allegedly starting the January 2025 blaze that threatened celebrity homes and scorched hillsides, is attempting to introduce evidence about the Los Angeles Fire Department's response, according to court documents. Prosecutors argue this strategy is a diversionary tactic designed to obscure his alleged role in causing the disaster.

"The defense is trying to reframe this case around fire department operations rather than the defendant's actions," prosecutors stated in their motion. They contend Rinderknecht's attorneys are "grasping at straws" by highlighting isolated incidents they claim demonstrate departmental ineptitude.

One example cited involves a firefighter who reportedly showed little concern upon seeing smoke. Prosecutors counter that smoldering brush is common after fire suppression efforts and that the firefighter's reaction reflected professional experience rather than negligence.

Prosecutors have asked the judge for a pretrial ruling to exclude what they call "misleading arguments" that could "transform his trial into a misguided and much lengthier trial about the LAFD." The wildfire swept through the affluent Pacific Palisades neighborhood last year, forcing evacuations and threatening multimillion-dollar properties before being contained after days of intense firefighting efforts.
