Great Yarmouth, a popular coastal destination in Norfolk, has emerged as one of the UK's most debt-burdened communities, with official data revealing it holds the third-highest rate of residents seeking debt relief nationwide.
Government statistics indicate that 293 individuals in the Great Yarmouth area entered the Breathing Space debt respite program last year—a rate of 36.2 per 10,000 people. Only Halton in Cheshire (54.9 per 10,000) and Blackpool (38.1 per 10,000), another seaside town, recorded higher rates.
Local experts attribute this financial strain largely to the town's seasonal tourism economy. Louis Hubbard, a debt advisor with the charity Dial in Great Yarmouth, explains the cyclical challenge:
"Great Yarmouth is in a really unique situation, primarily due to deprivation that stems from being a seaside holiday destination. People work throughout the summer at holiday parks and along the seafront, but come winter, there's not much work available. This seasonal shift leaves many struggling to get by."
Across Norfolk, the number of people using Breathing Space has nearly doubled since 2021, rising from 8.8 to 17.2 per 10,000 residents. The national trend mirrors this increase, with rates more than doubling from 8.7 to 18.2 per 10,000 people over the same period.
Hubbard notes that mental health issues often exacerbate debt problems, creating a difficult cycle for residents:
"People sometimes avoid facing their financial situation, which allows debts to grow and potentially leads to enforcement action. This creates even more stress, trapping people in a debt cycle they struggle to break."
With global events continuing to drive up living costs, organizations like National Debtline warn that more people may face financial hardship. Grace Brownfield of National Debtline emphasizes the importance of seeking help early:
"We're seeing people fall into debt for the first time because costs have been so high. There's often more support available than people realize, and debt advice charities can help navigate what options exist."
Mark Hitchcock, chief executive of Norfolk Citizens Advice, reassures those hesitant to seek assistance:
"Our colleagues are welcoming and understanding. They won't increase your stress or shame—they'll work through your situation, examine your budget, and explore all available options, including programs like Breathing Space for those facing significant debt."
As economic pressures mount, the combination of seasonal employment patterns and rising costs continues to challenge communities like Great Yarmouth, highlighting the need for accessible financial support systems.
