St Helens surged to the top of the Betfred Super League table with a gritty 24-14 comeback victory over Hull FC at the MKM Stadium on Tuesday night.
The visitors, trailing 12-6 at halftime, produced a dominant second-half performance to secure their sixth league win of the season. Tries from Noah Stephens, Kyle Feldt, and Harry Robertson overturned the deficit and sealed a crucial away triumph.
The match unfolded against a backdrop of emotional turmoil for Hull FC, following the recent announcement that head coach John Cartwright will depart at season's end. His players responded with a fiercely committed first half.
"I'm really disappointed for the players that they didn't get a result. They gave their everything," a visibly emotional Cartwright told BBC Radio Humberside after the match. "I'm so proud of the playing group... but we are just lacking that little bit of class to get over the line."
Hull opened the scoring in the 11th minute through Logan Moy, capitalizing on a slick pass from Zak Hardaker. St Helens hit back nine minutes later when 19-year-old Jake Davies scored his first Super League try. However, Amir Bourouh's 28th-minute try restored Hull's six-point lead heading into the break.
The second half belonged entirely to Saints. Stephens leveled the scores seven minutes after the restart. Despite having a Jackson Hastings try disallowed, the visitors' pressure told. A clever chip from Tristan Sailor set up Kyle Feldt to put Saints ahead just after the hour mark. The result was sealed with six minutes remaining when Harry Robertson pounced on a Hardaker error to score a brilliant individual try.
The victory was marred slightly for Saints by an injury to Deon Cross, who failed a Head Injury Assessment and will miss next week's clash. Hull's Sam Lisone suffered a long-term bicep tear.
As the final whistle blew, the home crowd offered Cartwright a warm ovation—a stark contrast to the boos directed at the club's chief executive earlier in the evening. With Saints now sitting atop the Super League, and Hull facing an uncertain future, the drama at the MKM Stadium encapsulated the highs and lows of professional sport.
