The sudden shutdown of Spirit Airlines has thrown U.S. air travel into chaos, leaving passengers stranded and rival carriers scrambling to fill the void. Chris Sununu, president and CEO of Airlines for America, didn’t mince words when discussing the possibility of a government bailout for the defunct budget carrier.

“It made no financial sense whatsoever,” Sununu said in an interview on Bloomberg This Weekend. He argued that propping up Spirit would have been an unjustifiable use of taxpayer money, given the airline’s long-standing financial struggles and the industry’s ability to absorb its routes.

The collapse has hit low-income travelers particularly hard, with many now facing higher fares as they seek alternatives from full-service airlines. Comments on social media echoed the frustration: “Those of us on fixed incomes who need to travel economically will be priced out,” one user wrote.

Sununu emphasized that the market is already adjusting, with competitors stepping in to restore capacity. However, he acknowledged the immediate pain for stranded passengers and Spirit employees, urging swift action to mitigate disruptions.
