Taiwan's President William Lai Ching-te has arrived in Eswatini for an official visit, despite mounting pressure from China to cancel the trip. Eswatini is the last remaining African nation to maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, not Beijing.
The visit is seen as a strategic move to reinforce Taiwan's international alliances amid increasing diplomatic isolation efforts by China. President Lai is expected to hold talks with King Mswati III on bilateral cooperation in trade, health, and technology.
China has repeatedly called on Eswatini to sever ties with Taiwan, threatening economic repercussions. However, the kingdom has so far resisted, valuing its longstanding relationship with Taipei.
Observers say Lai's visit could provoke a strong response from Beijing, which views Taiwan as a breakaway province and opposes any official foreign engagements with the island's leaders.
