Tottenham Hotspur has condemned what it describes as "vile, dehumanising racism" directed at defender Kevin Danso on social media following the team's 2-2 draw against Brighton on Saturday.
The club confirmed it has reported the "significant and abhorrent" abuse targeting the 27-year-old Austrian center-back to police and relevant authorities. Danso joined Spurs in 2025 and faced criticism after an error allowed Brighton's Georginio Rutter to score a stoppage-time equalizer, keeping Tottenham in the Premier League relegation zone.
In a strongly worded statement, Spurs declared: "We will push for the strongest possible action against each and every person we identify. Kevin has our complete and unconditional support as a player and as a person. No-one at this club will ever stand alone in the face of this."
The club emphasized that "nothing about form or league position can ever excuse or explain racist abuse" and described the behavior as "without doubt a criminal offense" that "will not be tolerated."
Danso addressed the situation on Instagram, stating the abuse "doesn't define me" and "won't distract me from what is important." He added: "I know who I am, what I stand for, and why I play."
This incident occurred during the Premier League's No Room For Racism campaign weekend, which aims to promote diversity and combat discrimination in football. The league issued its own statement, saying: "Discriminatory abuse has absolutely no place in football or wider society. Anybody who chooses to abuse others is not welcome in our game and they are not a true fan."
The Premier League pledged to work with clubs, football bodies, law enforcement, and social media companies to address the issue, warning that "any individuals identified and found guilty of discrimination will face the strongest possible consequences, including club bans and legal prosecution."
This marks the latest in a series of racist incidents targeting Premier League players this season, with four players reportedly abused during a single weekend in February. Earlier this week, Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo highlighted further racial abuse he has received, following a recent case where a 47-year-old man was arrested and charged by Merseyside Police for racist abuse directed at Semenyo during his time with former club Bournemouth.
