UK Parliament Set to Pass 'Hillsborough Law' Ending State Cover-Ups

MPs are expected to approve the long-delayed 'Hillsborough Law' later today, aiming to end cover-ups by public officials and authorities. The legislation would impose a duty on public bodies to tell the truth and cooperate with official investigations.

Approval in Sir Keir Starmer's final days as prime minister would allow him to present it as part of his legacy. Andy Burnham, his expected successor, called the debate a "deeply moving moment."

The law, named after the 1989 Hillsborough disaster that killed 97 people, addresses false narratives spread by police and withheld evidence. It also commits to legal aid for victims of disasters or state-related deaths.

A previous delay arose over how the duty applies to intelligence services. New amendments, accepted by campaigners, ensure no exemption for MI5 and MI6 while protecting national security.

Sir Keir stated the law is a "tribute to the incredible families" who fought for justice. Burnham emphasized the need to reshape state-public relations and ensure all communities are treated equally.

Campaigners including bereaved families welcomed the bill's progress, saying it changes how survivors are treated and protects others forever.
