Ulster Storms Past La Rochelle to Secure Challenge Cup Semifinal Berth

Ulster powered into the Challenge Cup semifinals with a commanding 41-24 victory over La Rochelle in a rain-soaked quarterfinal clash at the Affidea Stadium. The Irish province now stands just one win away from their first European final appearance since 2012.

"It was a near-perfect performance in difficult conditions," said Ulster head coach Richie Murphy. "The players showed tremendous character and executed our game plan brilliantly."

Zac Ward set the tone early, weaving through La Rochelle's defense to score the opening try within five minutes. Scrum-half Nathan Doak added the conversion and later slotted a penalty to extend Ulster's advantage.

Despite a penalty from La Rochelle's Diego Jurd, Ulster responded immediately with Tom O'Toole crashing over from a five-meter scrum. The hosts continued their dominance when Cormac Izuchukwu powered through for a try on his 50th appearance for the province.

La Rochelle managed a late first-half score through Judicael Cancoriet, but Ulster maintained control throughout the second period. Ward crossed for his second try shortly after the restart, followed by scores from Bryn Ward and James McCormick to seal the comprehensive victory.

Ulster will face either Benetton or Exeter Chiefs in the semifinals as they pursue their first trophy since winning the Celtic League in 2006. The victory marks a significant step forward for Richie Murphy's side, who have shown impressive form throughout the European competition.

La Rochelle, missing several key players due to injuries and Top 14 commitments, struggled to contain Ulster's relentless attack in challenging weather conditions that saw driving rain throughout the match.
