Former England international and Harlequins lock Joe Launchbury has confirmed he will retire from professional rugby at the conclusion of the current season.
The 35-year-old forward, who earned 70 caps for England, made the announcement on Tuesday, marking the end of a distinguished 14-year career at the highest levels of the sport.
"It has been coming for a while and it is certainly no secret, but the time feels right to step away from rugby at the end of this season," Launchbury stated. "Rugby has given me more than I ever dreamed of. Not just a career, but a life filled with purpose and friendships as well as memories that will stay with me forever."
Launchbury's international career was highlighted by participation in three Six Nations championship-winning campaigns (2016, 2017, 2020) and two Rugby World Cup tournaments (2015, 2019), including England's run to the final in Japan. His final appearance in the white jersey came during the 2022 Six Nations.
After beginning his professional journey with Wasps, where he made 170 appearances and captained the side, Launchbury joined Harlequins in 2023 following Wasps' financial collapse. He has since made 50 appearances for the London club, though injuries have limited him to just six matches this season.
Harlequins head coach Jason Gilmore praised Launchbury's contributions, saying, "A quality operator on the field and an even better man off it, Joe has consistently set the standard with his exceptional leadership and professionalism. His impact for club and country in English rugby over a long period of time in such a demanding position demonstrates what a great servant he has been."
Launchbury acknowledged the physical toll of his career, noting, "I have given my all to my career and my body is telling me it needs a break." He expressed interest in remaining involved in rugby but emphasized his immediate focus on family, adding, "For now I am looking forward to what comes next, and most of all being present to watch my children grow up."
The lock's retirement announcement comes as he recovers from a short-term quad injury, with his final professional matches expected in the coming weeks as Harlequins complete their Premiership campaign.
