The Football Association of Wales (FAW) is preparing for the potential departure of head coach Craig Bellamy, with Burnley intensifying their pursuit of the manager. Former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper has emerged as a leading candidate to take over, according to sources.
FAW officials held informal discussions with Cooper prior to reports of Burnley's renewed interest in Bellamy. Rob Edwards, previously of Wolves, is also under consideration. Burnley, seeking a new manager after Scott Parker's departure following relegation from the Premier League, have yet to agree compensation with the FAW, which is demanding at least £1 million.
If Bellamy returns to Turf Moor, where he served as assistant to Vincent Kompany, the FAW has a ready-made shortlist. Cooper, who has been out of work since leaving Danish club Brondby earlier this year, would not require a compensation fee. Edwards was also in contention for the Wales job in 2024 but was then employed by Luton Town.
The FAW has also monitored Eric Ramsay, a former Wales and Manchester United assistant who briefly managed West Bromwich Albion during the 2025-26 season.
Bellamy, who has two years remaining on his four-year contract, has publicly stated he rejected club offers to stay and is committed to leading Wales at Euro 2028, which the nation will co-host. However, he has been open about his ambitions, leaving the door ajar for a move.
