Wales Fans Left Asking: Who to Support at the World Cup?

It is a question Wales fans didn't want to ask themselves. After all, the plan had been to follow Craig Bellamy's side across Canada, Mexico and the US as the country wrapped itself in a second successive World Cup fever. Instead, they face a familiar conundrum: who to support now that Wales are not there?

Some might back Bosnia-Herzegovina, the team that took Wales' potential spot in Group B, though that could be too triggering for others. Others may simply pick one of 11 nations with red home kits and pretend it's Harry Wilson scoring rather than Switzerland. If that sounds far-fetched, remember that Argentina once had Welsh fans cheering for them due to the urban myth that Gabriel Batistuta was from Patagonia and spoke Welsh (he wasn't and didn't).

Craig Bellamy has tipped Spain or England as teams who could go far, but where is the fun in supporting a favourite? Of course, everyone can simply enjoy the spectacle and take in the stories that emerge from the five-week tournament. But for those looking for reasons to back one team over another, BBC Sport Wales has found some justification.

Club Loyalties Wrexham fans will see two of their current squad in action: wingback Libby Cacace for New Zealand and Dom Hyam for Scotland, who earned a timely recall after impressing in his first season. Swansea fans can back New Zealand's Marko Stamenic, South Korea's Eom Ji Sung, and Australia's Cameron Burgess. Fifa's £265m pool for releasing players offers extra incentive to hope their players progress.

Curaçao's Debut Curaçao could be a popular choice, boasting the joy of a debut and uniting fans across the south Wales divide. Winger Kenji Gorre spent four years at Swansea, while Leandro Bacuna spent three years at Cardiff City.

Newport County Representation Antoine Semenyo of Ghana made his breakthrough on loan at Newport County, including being part of the side that shocked Leicester City in the FA Cup in 2019. Former Swansea forward Jordan Ayew will line up alongside him, captaining the Black Stars.

Former Players and Managers Marc Guehi, on loan at Swansea in 2020, now plays for England but may not get support due to rivalry. Croatia offers admiration for punching above their weight, with captain Luka Modric officially part of Swansea's ownership. Wrexham fans might back Ryan Reynolds' Canada, while Sabri Lamouchi (Cardiff) leads Tunisia, and Graham Potter (Swansea) leads Sweden. Former Swansea managers at the World Cup include Paul Clement (Brazil assistant) and Roberto Martinez (Portugal).

Martinez and the Cymru Connection Martinez, a former Swansea captain and boss, still beloved in south Wales, has a Welshman in his dugout: Richie Evans, son of former Wales winger Brian Evans. Evans spent a decade as physio at Swansea and is now head of performance for Portugal. Beyond that connection, Wales fans might hope Portugal lifts the trophy because the Nations League kicks off in the autumn with Portugal's first fixture a home game against Wales—giving Bellamy's side a chance to beat them and claim unofficial world champion status.

Or perhaps backing the hosts is more your thing. If the US succeeds, there can be a nod to Caersws, where former Bangor City player Phil Woosnam was born.
