Wales Legend Aaron Ramsey Hangs Up His Boots After Illustrious Career

Wales captain and former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has announced his immediate retirement from professional football at the age of 35.

The playmaker, who had been without a club since departing Mexican side Pumas UNAM last year, is now expected to transition into a coaching role. Ramsey concludes his playing days as one of Wales' most celebrated footballers, having netted 21 goals in 86 international caps and leading his nation to three major tournaments.

His legacy was cemented during Wales' unforgettable journey to the Euro 2016 semi-finals, a campaign that earned him a spot in UEFA's official Team of the Tournament. He later featured at Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, marking Wales' long-awaited return to the global stage after a 64-year absence.

Ramsey's club career began at his hometown team, Cardiff City, before a high-profile move to Arsenal in 2008. Over 11 years with the Gunners, he lifted the FA Cup three times, memorably scoring the winning goal in two of those finals. Subsequent chapters included stints at Juventus, Nice, a loan spell at Rangers—where he helped the club reach the 2022 Europa League final—and a sentimental return to Cardiff City, which included a brief period as interim head coach.

His final playing endeavor was with Pumas UNAM, a move motivated by his desire to maintain fitness for a potential World Cup appearance this summer, had Wales qualified. However, unable to secure a new club since leaving Mexico, Ramsey has chosen to end his remarkable playing journey.

In a heartfelt social media post announcing his decision, Ramsey expressed his gratitude:

“This has not been an easy decision to make. After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football. Firstly, I want to start with Wales. It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it... To the Red Wall. You have been there through thick and thin! You have been an essential and indispensable part of our success. I can't thank you enough. We've been through everything together and it's been an honour to represent you. Diolch.”

He also extended thanks to all the clubs, managers, and staff who supported him throughout a career that allowed him to “live my dream and play at the highest level.”
