Victor Wembanyama made an explosive entrance to the NBA playoffs, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a commanding 111-98 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 1 of their first-round series.
The French phenom, a leading contender for the league's Most Valuable Player award, poured in a game-high 35 points, with 21 coming in a dominant first half. His performance set the tone for the Spurs' solid start to their postseason campaign.
"It's good to get this one out of the way," Wembanyama remarked after the game. "We just tried to do the things we've been doing all year and stay solid. There was pressure on us to win the first game, but it wasn't that much pressure if we just stayed to the plan."
Elsewhere, the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder and the Boston Celtics delivered statement wins to open their respective playoff journeys.
The top-seeded Thunder, led by last year's Finals MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his 25 points, dismantled the Phoenix Suns 119-84 in a lopsided Western Conference affair.
In the East, the second-seeded Boston Celtics overpowered the Philadelphia 76ers 123-91 behind a balanced attack. Jayson Tatum posted a near triple-double with 25 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 assists, while Jaylen Brown added 26 points.
The night's biggest surprise came from the Orlando Magic, who stunned the Eastern Conference's top-seeded Detroit Pistons 112-101 on the road. Paolo Banchero led the eighth-seeded Magic with 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists, overshadowing a playoff career-high 39 points from Detroit's Cade Cunningham.
The loss extends a dismal home playoff record for the Pistons, who have now failed to win a postseason game in Detroit for 11 consecutive matches dating back to 2008.
"[We] didn't come out with the right energy, gave them life early on," a reflective Cunningham said post-game. "Then we had to deal with that for the rest of the game. There's no confidence drop from us. It's going to be a long, fun series."
The opening night of the NBA playoffs showcased both expected dominance from the league's elite and a potential upset in the making as the quest for the championship officially began.
