Worcester Foodbank is poised for a significant expansion after receiving approval to take over an adjacent unit at its Lowesmoor Wharf location. This move will enable the charity to broaden its services beyond emergency food parcels, offering comprehensive support to struggling households.
Manager Grahame Lucas emphasized the transformative potential of the new space, stating: "With the brilliant backing of our new landlord, we can now plan for the future with the security and space we need to provide more than just food. Whether that's offering the comfort of a listening ear or equipping people with the advice and skills they need to get back on their feet."
The expansion includes additional storage for donations, more workspace for staff, and a refurbished warehouse that distributed 14,244 emergency parcels last year. Plans also feature a new reception and serving area to eliminate outdoor queuing.
A spokesperson revealed that the foodbank intends to integrate emotional support and budgeting advice from the local Citizens Advice group into its services. Statistics show that while over two-fifths of visitors come only once annually, 17% return six times or more, highlighting the need for sustained assistance.
Several businesses have contributed to the renovation, with Poundland donating shelving, Dulux providing paint, and Severn Trent Water offering volunteer support. This community-driven effort aims to give the foodbank's support services a "new lease of life," transforming it into a holistic resource center for Worcester residents facing hardship.
