Yemen’s Deadly Legacy: Landmines Claim Lives Despite Ceasefire and Clearance Campaigns

Despite a fragile truce and international de-mining efforts, landmines planted during Yemen’s long conflict remain a deadly threat to civilians. The explosive remnants of war continue to kill and maim, particularly in densely populated areas and along key transportation routes.

"The landmines don't care about ceasefires," said a local health worker. "They just wait."

De-mining teams, often underfunded and working in dangerous conditions, have cleared thousands of devices, but vast swaths of the country remain contaminated. The United Nations estimates that over 1 million landmines litter the landscape—some dating back to the current conflict, others left from previous wars.

Children are especially vulnerable, often mistaking the small, camouflaged devices for toys. Survivors face lifelong disabilities, and many communities are effectively cut off from farmland, water sources, and schools.

International aid organizations have called for more funding and better access to affected areas, stressing that peace talks must include concrete steps for comprehensive clearance and victim assistance.
