The Bristol Bears reignited their Premiership play-off ambitions in spectacular fashion, dismantling Gloucester 53-12 in a record-breaking display at Ashton Gate.
Needing a victory to stay in the hunt for the top four after consecutive defeats, the Bears delivered a commanding performance, scoring seven tries and amassing their highest-ever points total against Gloucester across all competitions.
"We had to win this game," said Bristol director of rugby Pat Lam, whose side responded emphatically to the pressure.
The hosts wasted no time, scoring with their first three forays into Gloucester's 22. Kieran Marmion opened the floodgates with a close-range try after just three minutes. Winger Keleveti Ravouvou then crossed twice in quick succession, before captain Fitz Harding secured the bonus point with a cleverly worked score from a tap penalty.
A penalty try, awarded after a deliberate knock-on from Gloucester's Josiah Edwards-Giraud, sent Bristol into halftime with a commanding 33-12 lead. The visitors' woes were compounded by three first-half yellow cards.
The second half was a quieter affair, but Bristol added further gloss through a breakaway try from Tom Jordan and a powerful rolling maul score by Gabriel Oghre.
For Gloucester, the heavy defeat extends a miserable season. They have now won just twice in 13 matches and their defensive frailties were again exposed, having conceded 23 tries in the opening 20 minutes of games this season—the worst record in the league.
Tries from George Barton and Deian Gwynne provided fleeting moments of promise, but the loss leaves them languishing in eighth place.
The victory propels Bristol to within two points of the fourth-placed Exeter Chiefs, reigniting their play-off chase. They travel to face bottom-side Newcastle next week with renewed momentum, while Gloucester are left to search for answers after another demoralizing defeat.
