As the cost of living continues to squeeze household budgets, a Bristol shop offering children's clothes from as little as 50p is seeing a surge in demand from local families.
Kids Stuff, based in Bedminster, launched as a monthly pop-up in late 2024, inspired by a similar project in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Founder Kyle Henderson-Begg said demand has been so strong that the shop may open five days a week by the end of 2026.
"We believe that raising a family shouldn't cost the earth, and we're here to support local families and build community," Henderson-Begg said.
According to Consumer Price Index data, the cost of everyday baby clothing has risen by at least 30% since 2021. Kids Stuff keeps prices low, with baby clothes starting at 50p and older children's items costing a few pounds.
Henderson-Begg noted that customers appreciate being able to see and touch items before buying, unlike the "gamble" of purchasing clothing bundles online. "Here it's all laid out. They can have a look at it, they can have a rummage."
In addition to clothing, the shop offers a "pay what you can" hot meal and a soft play area for children, creating a community hub focused on affordability and support.
Kids Stuff also partners with referral organisations to help families in crisis, including those escaping domestic abuse and refugees. Around 10 new families are referred each month, receiving vouchers to choose their own clothing, preserving their dignity.
Mum-of-two Hannah Jones said rising costs have made even charity shops expensive. "Here, it's old-school prices and actually it's more realistic and affordable. I really enjoy coming here - you get way more for your money."
Tabitha Hubbard, shopping for her seven-month-old son Wilfred, emphasised sustainability: "I don't want to buy new things that he's only going to wear for a few months or a few weeks. Fast fashion, we don't need it."
Ruby Blaken, founder of Second Snuggle in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, offers tips for saving on children's clothes: embrace second-hand shops, buy ahead for the next size, choose versatile items like leggings and cardigans, and avoid fast fashion, which often wears out quickly.
