Cardiff Edge Ospreys in Heated Derby to Boost URC Playoff Bid

In a pulsating United Rugby Championship (URC) Welsh derby at the Arms Park, Cardiff secured a vital 24-21 victory over the Ospreys, reigniting their playoff aspirations. The win lifts the Blue and Blacks to fourth in the table, leveling them with other top-eight contenders who are yet to play this weekend.

Cardiff's tries came from lock Rory Thornton, captain Liam Belcher, and flanker Dan Thomas, with fly-half Callum Sheedy adding nine points from the boot. The Ospreys, despite a spirited fightback, were left to rue disciplinary issues that saw them reduced to fewer than 15 men for much of the match.

Ospreys wing Daniel Kasende received a 20-minute red card in the first half for dangerous play, while centre Owen Watkin and fly-half Dan Edwards were also sin-binned at crucial moments. Cardiff had their own disciplinary lapses, with Belcher and lock James McNally shown yellow cards, but they managed to hold on for a scrappy win.

The Ospreys scored tries through Keiran Williams, Jack Walsh, and Edwards, with the latter converting all three. However, their late surge fell short as Cardiff's defense stood firm in the dying minutes.

This victory marks Cardiff's first home win over the Ospreys since 2007 and was watched by a crowd of 12,036, including WRU chief executive Abi Tierney. The result also opens up a three-point lead in the Welsh Shield, a sub-competition that determines regional bragging rights, though the Ospreys can reclaim it if they beat the Scarlets on 9 May.

The match was played against a backdrop of off-field drama after the WRU's proposed sale of Cardiff to Ospreys owners Y11 Sports & Media collapsed just two days earlier, adding extra spice to an already fervent encounter.
