Chelsea's Bold Stand: Rosenior Suspends Star Midfielder Fernandez for Public Comments

Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has made his first major disciplinary move at Stamford Bridge, suspending midfielder Enzo Fernandez for two matches after the Argentine publicly expressed admiration for Real Madrid and cast doubt on his future with the Blues.

Fernandez, 25, sparked controversy last month while on international duty in Buenos Aires. In interviews with a YouTuber and later on television with his partner Valentina Cervantes, he stated he would "love" to live in Madrid and praised former Real Madrid star Toni Kroos. These comments came just as Chelsea faced mounting pressure following a 3-0 Premier League loss to Everton and a humiliating 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

"The decision was necessary to protect the club's culture," Rosenior explained, emphasizing that Fernandez had "crossed a line" with his public remarks.

The suspension—issued jointly by Rosenior, co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, and backed by ownership—ruled Fernandez out of an FA Cup tie against Port Vale and Sunday's Premier League clash with Manchester City. It marks a significant early test for Rosenior, who took charge in January after Enzo Maresca's departure amid tensions with the same leadership group.

Chelsea's handling of the situation drew a clear distinction between Fernandez and defender Marc Cucurella, who also criticized the club's transfer policy publicly. While Cucurella apologized privately and reaffirmed his commitment, avoiding punishment, Fernandez is understood to remain interested in a move to Real Madrid. His agent, Javier Pastore, called the suspension "completely unfair" in an interview with The Athletic.

Despite the disciplinary action, Rosenior has extended an olive branch to the midfielder, who continues to train with the first team and retains his leadership role. "Enzo and I are in a very good place," Rosenior said after the Port Vale match. "Things aren't what people maybe think they are."

However, tensions persist behind the scenes. Fernandez's camp has claimed he "deserves much more than he is currently earning," and reports from Argentina suggest attempts were made this week to reduce the suspension. With his contract running until 2032 and Chelsea likely demanding at least the £107 million they paid Benfica in 2023, a transfer appears financially challenging. Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid have shown interest but are unlikely to meet such demands.

The episode underscores broader issues at Chelsea, where incentive-based contracts have sometimes frustrated high-profile players locked into long-term deals. Meanwhile, Rosenior has indicated that several players—including Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill—are set for contract renewals this season, though talks with Fernandez may pause until after the World Cup.

As Fernandez prepares to return against Manchester United next weekend, all eyes will be on whether this disciplinary stand strengthens Rosenior's authority or escalates tensions with one of Chelsea's key figures.
