Portadown Football Club has announced the appointment of David Jeffrey as their new manager, marking a significant return for one of Northern Ireland's most successful football figures.
Jeffrey, who has been out of management since stepping down from Ballymena United in 2023, will officially take the helm at the end of the current season. Interim manager Gary Thompson will oversee the team's final league match against Bangor this Saturday before Jeffrey assumes full control.
"I'm excited to return to management with Portadown," Jeffrey said in a statement. "This club has a proud history, and I'm looking forward to building something special here."
The 63-year-old will be joined by David Douglas, who will serve as head of recruitment and football operations. Douglas previously worked as performance analyst under former Portadown manager Niall Currie from 2023 to 2025.
Jeffrey brings an impressive track record to the role, having enjoyed remarkable success during his 17-year tenure at Linfield. He guided the Blues to nine league titles, seven Irish Cups (including six league and cup doubles), and the inaugural Setanta Cup in 2005.
After a two-year break from management, Jeffrey returned to football with Ballymena United, where he led the Sky Blues to their first and only League Cup victory in his debut season. Under his leadership, Ballymena achieved second place in the league in 2019 and reached multiple cup finals.
Portadown supporters will be hoping Jeffrey can replicate this success as the club looks to strengthen its position in the NIFL Premiership. His appointment represents a major coup for the club, bringing in one of Northern Irish football's most decorated managers.
The transition comes at a crucial time for Portadown as they prepare for next season's campaign, with Jeffrey's extensive experience expected to provide stability and direction for the club's future.
