England's Matt Fitzpatrick delivered a dramatic finish to claim the RBC Heritage title, defeating world number one Scottie Scheffler in a sudden-death playoff at Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina.
Fitzpatrick, who started the final round with a three-shot advantage, appeared to have the tournament in hand until a costly bogey on the 18th hole forced extra holes. The 31-year-old quickly regrouped, however, hitting a brilliant approach shot on the first playoff hole before calmly sinking a birdie putt to secure victory.
"To bounce back like that after the disappointment on 18 shows incredible mental strength," said Fitzpatrick after his win. "Scottie is playing the best golf in the world right now, so to come out on top against him means a lot."
The Sheffield-born golfer had played nearly flawless golf throughout the final round, going 17 holes without a bogey while Scheffler steadily closed the gap. Both players found trouble on the 72nd hole, but while Scheffler managed to save par, Fitzpatrick's chip shot left him with a difficult putt that he couldn't convert.
This victory marks Fitzpatrick's second PGA Tour title in just over a month, following his win at the Valspar Championship in March. He also finished second at last month's Players Championship, signaling a remarkable return to form for the 2022 U.S. Open champion.
For Scheffler, the result represents a second consecutive runner-up finish after placing second to Rory McIlroy at the Masters just one week earlier. The American world number one carded a four-under 67 in the final round but couldn't match Fitzpatrick's playoff heroics.
South Korea's Si-woo Kim finished third at 16-under par, two shots behind the leaders, after posting a final-round 68. Americans Collin Morikawa, Harris English, and Sweden's Ludvig Åberg tied for fourth at 13-under.
The win solidifies Fitzpatrick's position as one of golf's hottest players and adds another prestigious title to his growing resume, while Scheffler's consistent excellence continues despite falling just short of another victory.
