Matt Fitzpatrick delivered a masterclass in precision and fortune on Friday, carding a flawless 8-under 63 to seize a one-shot lead at the RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The Englishman, who won this event in a playoff last year, sits at 14-under par after a second round that blended skill with a remarkable stroke of luck.
On the par-three 14th, Fitzpatrick's tee shot appeared destined for trouble, pulling left toward the trees. Instead, the ball struck a cart path, caromed back onto the green, and was saved from rolling into the water by a strategically placed sprinkler head. From there, he drained a 30-foot putt for an improbable birdie.
"Yeah, it was lucky, there's no two ways about it," Fitzpatrick admitted afterward. "Sometimes you need that in a week, so it's nice to get, and then even nicer to take advantage of it."
The 2022 U.S. Open champion capitalized fully, adding two more birdies over his final three holes to separate himself from a packed leaderboard. Norway's Viktor Hovland remains his closest pursuer at 13-under after a birdie at the 17th kept him within striking distance.
"I wouldn't say I striped it today, but at least I kind of kept the ball in front of me, and that's what you're trying to do on this golf course," Hovland said.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, playing alongside Fitzpatrick, posted a steady 67 but struggled on the greens, leaving him seven shots back. Other notable scores include Harris English at 10-under and a group at 9-under featuring Patrick Cantlay, Ludvig Åberg, and Sepp Straka.
Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth endured a difficult day with three double bogeys in a round of 72, while Akshay Bhatia fired an 11-birdie 63 to climb back into contention at 6-under.
With sweltering heat and unpredictable winds testing the field, Fitzpatrick's bogey-free performance stood out as the round of the day, positioning him perfectly to defend his title heading into the weekend.
