Arthur Fils continued his stunning resurgence on the ATP Tour by capturing the Barcelona Open title on Sunday, defeating Andrey Rublev in straight sets.
The 21-year-old French star, who missed the latter part of the 2025 season with a back injury, showcased his returning form with a commanding 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) victory over the Russian fifth seed. This marks Fils's first ATP title since his triumph in Tokyo in October 2024 and signals a powerful return to the sport's upper echelons.
"I want to say a big thank you to my team," Fils said during the trophy presentation. "It's been eight tough months struggling with injury, but we're back on the court and we won the trophy, so I'm pretty happy about that."
Since returning to competition in February, Fils has compiled an impressive resume: a runner-up finish at the Qatar Open (falling to Carlos Alcaraz), quarterfinal appearances at Indian Wells, and a semifinal run in Miami. This Barcelona victory is set to propel him back into the world's top 25 rankings.
Rublev, gracious in defeat, paid tribute to his opponent's performance. "The way you are playing, it's ridiculous," he told Fils. "You proved that you're one of the best players on the Tour."
In the doubles final, British pair Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool claimed their first title of 2026, defeating the French-Italian duo of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Andrea Vavassori 6-3, 6-4. The victory comes after several near-misses this season for the reigning Wimbledon doubles champions.
"We had not won a title this year but had been in a couple of finals," Cash noted. "It is always important to get back to winning ways and get comfortable in those moments again. I am happy with the week."
The Barcelona Open concludes with Fils establishing himself as a formidable force on clay as the European season progresses, while the doubles champions reaffirm their status among the elite pairs in men's tennis.
