Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has staunchly defended his players' exuberant celebrations following their crucial 2-1 victory over Arsenal, dismissing criticism from pundits as unwarranted.
Guardiola's comments come after former England captain Wayne Rooney described City's post-match revelry as "a little bit premature," while ex-Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy called it "excessive." The City boss responded with characteristic defiance.
"I see that game and we had to sweat and fight to beat them because they have everything," Guardiola stated. "They are a top team, a contender to win the Champions League and top of the Premier League. When I'm on the sidelines and seeing how Arsenal is playing, I give incredible credit."
The dramatic win at Etihad Stadium saw City players gather in an emotional huddle at full-time while supporters erupted in celebration. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma leaped into the crowd, match-winner Erling Haaland removed his shirt during a lap of appreciation, and a banner reading 'panic on the streets of London' was unfurled in the south stand.
Rooney expressed concern about the timing of such celebrations, noting: "[There are] six games to go for City. It is obviously a big win. But I also think for Arsenal they have to pick themselves up from that. It was a bit premature and might come back to bite them."
Murphy offered a different perspective, suggesting: "I think it was more a celebration of realising that they are in this and it is in their own hands. They have beaten the opposition, sent out a warning and message that they are here and 'we are back with you.'"
The victory has significant implications for the Premier League title race, reducing Arsenal's lead to just three points. City can claim top spot with a win at Burnley on Wednesday, a remarkable turnaround given they've spent only six days at the summit this season compared to Arsenal's 200-plus days in first place.
Guardiola's defense of his players' emotional response underscores the high-stakes nature of the clash between the title contenders and sets the stage for a dramatic conclusion to the Premier League season.
