An iconic piece of Manchester United's history is set to go under the hammer, with a vintage stadium sign from Old Trafford's Stretford End carrying a guide price of £60,000. The sign, which originally adorned the famous stand, is being sold by a private collector who obtained it with the personal blessing of legendary manager Sir Matt Busby.
The auctioneers confirmed that the vendor had a close relationship with Sir Matt Busby, who granted permission for the sign's removal in 1992.
The sign features the 16 large letters spelling "Manchester United," each standing three feet tall, along with 12 smaller letters completing the "football club" designation. While the original neon lighting tubes are no longer present, the letters remain in varying states of preservation, offering a tangible connection to the club's storied past.
In a surprising twist, the same auction will also feature a pair of Cristiano Ronaldo's golden Nike boots, discarded by the superstar after a training session in 2004. Retrieved from the bin by longtime club cleaner Tony Heywood, the footwear now carries a guide price of £15,000.
Both items are scheduled for sale at Graham Budd auctioneers in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, on April 28th, offering football memorabilia collectors a rare chance to own pieces of Manchester United's legacy.
