Mike Farrell, who played Captain B.J. Hunnicutt on the iconic series MASH*, recently revealed that the show's collaborative environment was a dream for the cast. In an episode of the Still Here Hollywood podcast, the 87-year-old actor recalled his surprise when director and executive producer Gene Reynolds welcomed input from actors during script readings.

"Gene said, 'Okay, page one.' And I thought 'Was I asleep? Didn't we just do that?'" Farrell shared. "He said, 'Oh, Mike. Here's where we go through the script page by page to see if you, the actors, have any thoughts, any ideas, any suggestions.'"

Farrell described the experience as "dying and going to heaven," adding that the open-door policy fostered a creative community. This approach not only shaped storylines but also allowed Farrell to develop his skills as a writer and director—he went on to write eight episodes and direct five of the beloved series.

Beyond professional growth, MASH* became a source of lifelong friendships. Farrell noted his close bond with Alan Alda, who played Hawkeye Pierce, saying, "I dearly loved the people who are gone and loved the people who are still with us. Alan and I are very close, remaining so after many years."

The show's collaborative spirit left a lasting impact on Farrell, who still cherishes the creative and personal connections made during its 11-season run.
