In a stunning triumph for low-budget horror, Curry Barker's Obsession has smashed through the $300 million mark at the global box office, delivering a staggering 400x return on its modest $750,000 production budget. The film's success signals a major shift in audience preferences, as younger moviegoers flock to original genre fare over legacy franchises.
Released by Focus Features on May 15, Obsession quickly became a viral hit among Gen Z audiences, holding the No. 2 spot domestically for a full month. It now stands as Focus Features' highest-grossing release ever and ranks fifth among 2026's top domestic earners—a remarkable feat against big-budget competitors.
Director Curry Barker, 26, emerged from YouTube and made his feature debut with Milk & Serial in 2024. Obsession premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where Focus Features acquired it for roughly $14 million.
The film's runaway success mirrors that of Backrooms, another Gen Z-driven horror hit that crossed $250 million on a tiny budget. Together, they indicate that younger audiences are willing to return to theaters for fresh, youth-targeted stories, while legacy franchises like Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and Masters of the Universe have struggled to connect.
Barker's career is skyrocketing. In April, A24 tapped him to write and direct a reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This week, Universal Pictures announced Barker will write, direct, and produce an original horror film through Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Spooky Pictures, and Divide/Conquer. His next movie, Anything..., is already generating buzz as fans eagerly await his next move.
