Kettering's Token-Based Pop-Up Shop Offers Lifeline Amid Soaring Living Expenses

A monthly pop-up shop in Kettering, Northamptonshire, is providing essential relief to families grappling with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Operated by the LIVE team at Drover's Hall, this community-driven initiative distributes donated clothing, toiletries, and household goods entirely free of charge.

Visitors receive tokens that can be exchanged for up to 10 items, ranging from school uniforms and workwear to everyday apparel. Denise, a local resident, shared her experience: "After significant weight loss, I needed to rebuild my wardrobe. Since I'm currently unable to work due to health issues, this service has saved me hundreds of pounds."

Emma Reeds, a day centre officer with Kettering LIVE, explained the project's origins: "With the cost of living crisis, it's great to be able to give back to a community who might be in need. Customers have told us they've been able to buy food because they've not had to buy essential clothing."

Another shopper, Lisa, highlighted the shop's family-oriented approach: "I came to support my family. You can choose fashion items and get something for someone else while you're here. It's genuinely helping."

Denise added context about the local area: "LIVE Kettering makes a difference because Kettering is quite a poor town with limited financial resources, so many people struggle financially. We're very grateful for what they do."

This pop-up shop forms part of a broader service established by North Northamptonshire Council, with similar events occurring across Kettering, Wellingborough, and Corby.
