macOS 27 Golden Gate Public Beta: Subtle Liquid Glass Refinements and Siri Voice Customization Steal the Show

The macOS 27 Golden Gate public beta is now available for all M-series Macs, and the most immediately noticeable change is the toned-down Liquid Glass aesthetic. For users who found the previous transparency effects overwhelming, this update alone makes the beta worth trying.

Rumors earlier this year suggested that macOS 27 would prioritize performance and quality-of-life improvements over a major redesign—and that's exactly what Golden Gate delivers. Apple showcased a long list of practical tweaks during its WWDC keynote, including an optimized CPU scheduler and support for Mac mirroring in 5K resolution.

After using the developer beta on both an M5 MacBook Air and an M5 Max MacBook Pro, I can report that it's been surprisingly stable. Battery life and thermals have remained well-behaved, which is uncommon for early betas. If you're comfortable with potential bugs, the public beta offers a solid preview of what's to come.

The Highlights

The refined Liquid Glass design, unified corner radii, and updated sidebar visuals in File Explorer are all welcome improvements. While some may still prefer the flatter look of macOS Sequoia, the new transparency is much less distracting. When Golden Gate ships this fall, upgrading from Tahoe will be a no-brainer.

Siri's new Expressive Voices feature, available in developer beta 3 and now in the public beta, lets you adjust pacing and expressiveness. Currently limited to a female and male American accent with five levels each, I immediately set Siri to maximum speed and minimum expressiveness for a delightfully robotic tone. Every voice assistant should offer this level of customization.

The Menu Bar overflow button is another clever addition. When too many icons fill the bar, items beyond the notch are hidden behind a double-arrow button that temporarily expands them—no more lost shortcuts.

The Photos app's Clean Up tool impressed me. It removed a fly from a detailed flower convincingly, rivaling Google's Magic Eraser. For casual users, this built-in feature is a nice alternative to Photoshop.

The Mixed Bag

Other Photos features like Reframe and Extend aren't as successful. Reframe often produces unnatural-looking results—turning a plane into a fake AI mockup or giving a bunny odd proportions. Extend does a decent job of filling in image edges, but both give Apple Intelligence too much creative freedom. I'll stick with Lightroom Classic.

Siri AI still feels underutilized. While the voice customization is fun, the overall experience hasn't changed dramatically.

Overall, the macOS 27 Golden Gate public beta is worth a look for its visual refinements and Siri enhancements. Just be aware that some AI-powered features need more polish.
