Manchester United have identified Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni as a key midfield target for their summer rebuild, according to sources close to the club.

After focusing on attacking and goalkeeping reinforcements last year, United's priority has shifted to strengthening their midfield options. The club is monitoring several international players, with the 26-year-old French international emerging as a prominent figure on their radar.

"Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni has emerged as one of the international midfielders Manchester United are monitoring as they look to address their priority position this summer," a club insider revealed.

Tchouameni's contract at the Bernabeu runs until 2028, and Real Madrid are reportedly interested in extending that deal. However, with Real Madrid facing a disappointing season likely to end without silverware, the Spanish giants could be open to substantial offers during what promises to be a summer of significant change.

United previously expressed interest in Tchouameni when he left Monaco in 2022, but the player ultimately chose Real Madrid, where he has developed into one of the world's most effective midfielders, making 191 appearances and scoring seven goals.

Domestically, United have also been linked with Premier League midfielders including Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson, Brighton's Carlos Baleba, and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton. However, questions have been raised about Wharton's suitability given his similar playing style to United's emerging star Kobbie Mainoo, who is close to signing a lucrative contract extension.

The potential midfield overhaul comes as United edge closer to Champions League qualification following Chelsea's unexpected collapse. A victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday would leave United needing just one positive result from their remaining four matches to secure a return to Europe's elite competition after a two-year absence.

Financial flexibility for new signings has been created by the departures of high earners Casemiro and Jadon Sancho, with additional space potentially opening if Barcelona exercises their option to sign Marcus Rashford for €30 million (£26.1 million) before the June 15 deadline.
