Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has made it clear that the company intends to make the most of its revamped deal with OpenAI, describing the arrangement as a "win-win" that gives Microsoft royalty-free access to cutting-edge AI technology for years to come.
During a Q3 earnings call on Wednesday, Nadella was asked directly how the updated partnership would affect Microsoft's bottom line. He responded by emphasizing the value of the agreement. "We feel good about our partnership with OpenAI. I'm always very focused on any partnership and ensuring that there's a win-win construct at all times. That's how you can remain good partners," Nadella said.
He highlighted that Microsoft retains full access to OpenAI's intellectual property, including its models and agent products, but no longer pays licensing fees. "We have a frontier model, with all the IP rights that we will have access to all the way to '32 and we fully plan to exploit it," Nadella stated.
The revised deal, which ends Microsoft's exclusive access to OpenAI's technology, has sparked significant discussion in the tech industry. Microsoft can now offer OpenAI's innovations to its cloud customers without additional cost, a move Nadella signaled the company is eager to capitalize on.
