Monaghan's Redemption Run: Bannigan's Relief as Ulster Championship Journey Continues

Monaghan manager Gabriel Bannigan expressed profound relief after his team secured a hard-fought 0-27 to 2-14 victory over Cavan, advancing to the Ulster Championship semi-finals.

Following a challenging National League campaign that ended in relegation without a single win, the Farney County squad delivered a composed performance at St Tiernach's Park in Clones. This victory sets up a highly anticipated last-four clash with Derry, who comfortably defeated Antrim on Saturday.

"We've had a very tough league, so there is big relief," Bannigan told reporters after the match. "We've been preparing hard for this since the Galway game and were focused on getting a squad as near to full strength as we could. We weren't quite at full strength, but we were stronger."

Monaghan established early dominance through superior kick-outs and turnovers, building a seven-point lead by halftime. Bannigan attributed this strong start to the experience gained against Division One opponents during their difficult league campaign.

"The biggest thing we got out of the league was 16 debuts under our belt and big-game experience against Division One opponents," he explained. "You saw that today with some of the younger players. Stephen Mooney, Aaron Carey and Louis Kelly all came in and made big contributions."

Mooney's return proved particularly significant after missing much of the league through injury. The forward was among multiple standout performers as Monaghan displayed impressive scoring depth with ten different players contributing points.

The victory didn't come without tense moments. Cavan mounted a determined second-half comeback, forcing goalkeeper Rory Beggan to make a crucial penalty save from Paddy Lynch to preserve Monaghan's advantage.

"We're going to have to look at that because they got too many goal chances," Bannigan acknowledged. "Rory did pull off a couple of great saves, but Cavan were always going to come at us. They're our neighbours and our oldest rivals, so we knew they would bring it in the second half."

Looking ahead to the semi-final, Bannigan recognized the challenge posed by Derry while expressing confidence in his team's preparation.

"Derry are a top, top team and they'll be favorites," he stated. "But we'll prepare as best we can and try to be ready for them. Taking the game on its merits, we have an Ulster semi-final, and we'll approach it with the same determination we showed today."

With key players returning from injury and younger squad members gaining valuable championship experience, Monaghan's unexpected resurgence adds an intriguing subplot to the Ulster Championship narrative as they prepare to face one of the tournament's strongest contenders.
