NWSL Icon Jess Fishlock Announces Retirement After Historic Reign Career

Seattle Reign FC has confirmed that Welsh football legend Jess Fishlock will retire at the conclusion of the current National Women's Soccer League season, marking the end of an era for one of the league's most influential players.

Fishlock, 39, who concluded her international career with Wales last October, will hang up her boots following the Reign's final regular season match on November 1. The midfielder has been a cornerstone of the Seattle franchise since its inaugural 2013 season, making her the only remaining original squad member.

"It's hard to put into words what Seattle and this club mean to me," Fishlock expressed on the team's official website. "This is where I've grown, where I've fought, where I've experienced some of the best moments of my career. I'll never take for granted the people, the fans and the city that have supported me through it all, and I'm going to give everything I have in this final season."

With 219 NWSL appearances to her name, Fishlock's legacy includes three NWSL Shields, three NWSL Championship appearances, and the league's Most Valuable Player award in 2021. Reign General Manager Lesle Gallimore praised her as "not only one of the best players in NWSL history, but one of the most influential figures our game has seen."

Head coach Laura Harvey added, "She has carried this club on her shoulders at times and has always done it with pride. Her impact on this team, this city and the sport as a whole is immeasurable."

Beyond her club achievements, Fishlock holds the distinction of being Wales' greatest female footballer, having scored 48 goals across 166 international appearances—both national records. She recently joined Wales' coaching staff as a technical assistant for a World Cup qualifier in March, though she currently has no permanent role with the national team as she focuses on her final playing campaign.

Fishlock's career began at Cardiff City before stints with AZ, Bristol Academy, and Melbourne Victory, followed by her landmark move to Seattle. During her tenure with Reign, she also had loan spells at Glasgow City, Frankfurt, Lyon, Melbourne City, and Reading, showcasing her global impact on women's football.
