Rangers Eye World Cup Funds to Boost VAR and Referee Standards

Rangers are hopeful that Scotland's World Cup earnings can help finance improvements to video assistant referees (VAR) and overall officiating in Scottish football.

Controversial decisions have dominated the final week of the Scottish Premiership season, with Hearts feeling they were wrongly denied a penalty against Motherwell, while Celtic were awarded a late spot-kick against the same opponents days later.

Rangers chief executive Jim Gillespie revealed that the club is meeting the Scottish FA on Friday to discuss enhancements. "We have a long history of being the leading club," Gillespie said. "We want to improve Scottish football."

The Ibrox club has already held talks with the SPFL and the SFA, and Gillespie confirmed Rangers will pay their "fair share" of increased VAR costs.

"We all agreed we need to be more aligned on strategy and improving standards," he told the Press Association. "We can shout about a decision, but what changes? Do we just apologize on Monday? Do we accept that?"

Gillespie questioned whether Scotland needs full-time referees or better digital performance. "Ultimately, we are going to the World Cup and the SFA is making money. How do we get some of that to improve things?" he asked.

He emphasized that improving officiating is crucial for "Scottish football's reputation" but stressed that VAR should not be dismissed outright. "VAR is there to improve. Other leagues show it can have a positive impact. The strategy now is to align and move forward."

Rangers feel a duty to push for change. "We believe we are the leading club and want to be the leading club," Gillespie added. "We want Scottish football to be the best it can be. Our request is that governing bodies lead alongside us to improve all standards, especially refereeing."
