Red Bull's Rocky Start: Team Principal Mekies Analyzes Performance Gap in F1's Early Season

As Formula 1's unexpected April break concludes ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing faces mounting questions about their underwhelming start to the 2026 season. Despite preseason optimism about their new engine and competitive potential, the team currently sits sixth in the constructors' championship with just 16 points after three races.

Team principal Laurent Mekies offered candid insights into the team's struggles following recent performances. "We left Melbourne thinking we were one second off Mercedes and half a second off Ferrari," Mekies stated. "But in China and Japan, we became a distant force as McLaren progressed while we did not."

The issues appear multifaceted. Mekies noted that while Isack Hadjar qualified third in the season opener (despite Max Verstappen's qualifying crash), subsequent races revealed deeper problems. After Hadjar retired in Melbourne with engine trouble and Verstappen recovered to sixth, the team encountered more significant challenges.

"In China, we started scratching our heads about car balance and characteristics," Mekies explained. He identified two core issues: the need to close the performance gap with competitors, and the car's inability to provide Verstappen with the front-end bite he prefers to maximize his driving.

When asked whether Melbourne's fewer corners simply masked the car's weaknesses, Mekies responded: "It's a fair question. We certainly think in China we made a step back. This isn't just about corner count—there's a layer where, in certain cornering conditions, we lose performance compared to what our package should deliver."

The team now faces the challenge of addressing these technical shortcomings as the season resumes, with the Miami Grand Prix marking a critical opportunity to reverse their fortunes.
