Victor Wembanyama Makes NBA History as First Unanimous Defensive Player of the Year

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama has been named the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year, making history as the first unanimous winner in the award's 43-year history.

The 7-foot-4 French phenom received all 100 first-place votes from the media panel, a feat never before accomplished since the award's inception in 1981. At just 22 years old, Wembanyama also becomes the youngest player ever to win the prestigious defensive honor.

"I'm super, super happy to win this award and actually super proud to be the first ever unanimous winner," Wembanyama told NBC.

Wembanyama's defensive dominance has been undeniable this season. He led the league in blocks for the third consecutive year with an average of 3.1 per game while also contributing a steal per contest. His presence transformed San Antonio's defense, which finished third in the league and helped the Spurs post the second-best regular season record at 62-20.

Beyond his defensive prowess, the 2023 first overall draft pick posted career highs in scoring (25.0 points per game) and rebounding (11.5 per game), earning his second All-Star selection and establishing himself as a Most Valuable Player contender.

German NBA legend Dirk Nowitzki expressed amazement at Wembanyama's impact: "I've never seen anything like it. His defence is so good that he changes the game just by being on the court and taking away some of the lay-ups and twos that other teams would usually take."

Wembanyama joins Spurs legend David Robinson as only the second player to win the Defensive Player of the Year award within their first three NBA seasons. Oklahoma City Thunder's Chet Holmgren finished second in voting with 239 points, while Detroit Pistons' Ausar Thompson placed third with 60 points.

The historic achievement comes just days after Wembanyama scored a game-high 35 points in his playoff debut, leading San Antonio to victory over Portland. His remarkable rookie-to-superstar trajectory continues to reshape expectations for what's possible in professional basketball.
