A new Dungeons & Dragons actual play series is drawing from the horror playbook of Dark Dice to keep players on edge. Dungeon Master Jasmine Bhullar has introduced a house rule that makes long rests more difficult, forcing her party to think twice before recovering their strength.
"It’s a small change, but it changes the whole rhythm of the game," Bhullar said in a recent interview.
Instead of getting a full rest after a night's sleep, players must now succeed on a check or face complications. The mechanic, borrowed from Dark Dice's stress system, aims to heighten tension and prevent the party from steamrolling encounters. While Dark Dice pushes the concept further with permanent consequences, Bhullar's version is a lighter touch for her narrative-focused campaign.
Fans of actual play shows will recognize the shift, as the community increasingly experiments with rules that punish passivity. The series premieres next week, promising a mix of roleplay and survival horror.
