BBC Sport has announced the cancellation of its iconic Saturday lunchtime football program, Football Focus, after 52 years. The show, which first aired in 1974 as part of the Grandstand lineup, will conclude at the end of the current season.
Over the decades, Football Focus became a staple for football fans, offering pre-match interviews, analysis, and behind-the-scenes stories. However, shifting audience habits toward digital platforms and on-demand content have led to a steady decline in linear TV viewership since 2018.
Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, stated, "Football Focus has been a hugely important programme in the history of BBC Sport. This decision reflects the continued shift in how audiences engage with football and our commitment to evolving how we deliver content."
Under the new strategy, Kelly Somers' The Football Interview will move to Saturdays at 12:45 BST on BBC One, while Jason Mohammad's Final Score will start earlier at 15:45 BST. BBC Sport also plans to expand its digital output, including exclusive shows on YouTube, to reach fans wherever they are.
Throughout its run, Football Focus was fronted by legendary presenters including Bob Wilson, Steve Rider, Gary Lineker, and Dan Walker. The final host, Alex Scott, who has helmed the show for the past five years, will remain a key figure at BBC Sport, covering the men's World Cup in 2026 and the Women's World Cup in 2027.
Scott expressed gratitude for her time on the show, saying, "Football Focus has been a privilege to host. I'm excited for the future and the new projects ahead."
