Hibs Legends Murray and Taylor Back Hearts Title Bid: What Do Other Fans Think?

Sir Andy Murray and Josh Taylor, two of Scotland's sporting icons and lifelong Hibernian fans, have stirred controversy by suggesting a Hearts Premiership title win would benefit Scottish football. The tennis star and boxing champion's comments have sparked debate among Hibs supporters, with many expressing strong opposition on social media.

Murray, speaking to Sky Sports, acknowledged his stance might provoke backlash: "I'll probably get hammered for this, but I think it's a good thing for Scottish football if Hearts were able to win." Taylor echoed the sentiment, calling the Old Firm's decades-long dominance "boring" and adding, "As painful as it may be as a Hibs fan, it would be good for Scottish sport/football."

Hearts currently lead the Scottish Premiership by three points with five games remaining, seeking their first title since 1960. Rangers and Celtic, who have monopolized the championship since 1985-86, are hot on their heels.

Derby tensions ahead

As Hibs prepare to host Hearts at Easter Road on Sunday, the focus is on derby pride rather than title implications. Hibs sit fifth, 19 points adrift of their city rivals, but defender Warren O'Hara made clear his team's priorities: "If we can put a bee in their bonnet and stop them from doing what they want to do, then that is what we want to do, naturally."

Hibs won the last derby at home 3-2 in December, though they nearly threw away a four-goal lead. Hearts have struggled on the road recently, taking just one point from their last four away games.

Historical context

The intense rivalry was evident in 1986 when Hearts lost the title on goal difference to Celtic on the final day. Hibs fans celebrated that collapse, with Dundee United's Albert Kidd, who scored twice to deny Hearts, later receiving a player of the year award from a Hibs supporters' group in Australia.

While Murray and Taylor see a potential Hearts title as a positive for Scottish football, most Hibs fans at Easter Road on Sunday will be focused on one thing: derby victory and spoiling their rivals' dreams.
