Janet Jackson Declined Role in Michael Jackson Biopic, Says Sister La Toya

Janet Jackson opted not to appear in the new biopic about her brother Michael, according to sister La Toya Jackson. The film, titled Michael, hit UK cinemas this week (April 22) and chronicles the pop star's life from his early days with the Jackson 5 through his solo success after the album Bad. Michael is portrayed by his nephew Jaafar Jackson, and the project received cooperation from the late singer's estate.

While most of the Jackson family is depicted in the film, Janet is notably absent. Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere on Monday (April 20), La Toya explained to Variety: "She was asked and she kindly declined, so you have to respect her wishes." Director Antoine Fuqua added, "I have so much respect and love for Janet, but it's OK. She's supportive of Jaafar and that's what matters."

Michael is projected to earn $150 million (£111 million) worldwide in its opening weekend, according to Deadline, which would set a record for a music biopic. The current highest-grossing film in the genre is 2018's Bohemian Rhapsody, which made $910.8 million (£674 million) and was produced by Graham King, who also produced Michael.

Recently, the film underwent additional reshoots to alter its ending after legal issues prevented the portrayal of past challenges Jackson faced. Fuqua also questioned the integrity of Jackson's accusers, stating, "Sometimes people do nasty things for money."
