Conservative MP Patrick Spencer arrived at Southwark Crown Court today for the start of his trial on two counts of sexual assault. The 38-year-old, who represents Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which stem from alleged incidents at the Groucho Club in London in August 2023—before he was elected to Parliament.
The trial, expected to last four to five days, centers on allegations involving two separate women. Spencer, who was elected in July 2024, had the Conservative whip removed earlier this year and now sits as an independent MP. He is the son of billionaire Tory peer Michael Spencer.
Under parliamentary rules, a custodial sentence of one year or more would result in an automatic loss of his seat, while a shorter sentence could trigger a recall petition. The Crown Prosecution Service has reminded the public that proceedings are active and Spencer is entitled to a fair trial.
The Groucho Club, a private members' club in Soho's Dean Street, has been a fixture of London's social scene since 1985.
