A new legislative proposal in Congress aims to prevent the Department of Homeland Security from converting industrial warehouses into immigrant detention centers, directly challenging the Trump administration's ongoing mass deportation efforts.

Introduced by Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), the Ban Warehouse Detention Act would specifically bar Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) from using warehouses, factories, or other non-traditional spaces to hold detainees. The bill comes amid reports that ICE has purchased an 833,000-square-foot warehouse in Salt Lake City, paying well above its assessed value, intended for detention, processing, and logistics.

"ICE and CBP are murdering people in..." the bill's summary states, highlighting concerns over conditions in makeshift facilities. The legislation seeks to restrict the agency's ability to rapidly expand detention capacity without proper oversight or humane standards.

Critics argue that warehouse conversions lack basic necessities like adequate medical care, sanitation, and legal access. Supporters of the bill say it is a necessary step to curb what they describe as inhumane treatment of migrants under the current administration's policies.

The bill currently has no Republican cosponsors and faces an uphill battle in a Congress where immigration enforcement remains a deeply divisive issue. However, for Democrats, it represents a clear effort to push back against the expansion of detention infrastructure as part of the broader national debate on immigration reform.
