Oscar Isaac has opened up about his experience performing with electronic band Hot Chip in the latest season of the hit Netflix series Beef.
In the fifth episode of season two, Isaac's character Joshua Martin joins the band on keyboards for their 2006 hit 'Over and Over'. The scene, which is set at a chalet, was teased online with a clip shared by the band.
Speaking to Radio Times, Isaac revealed his long-standing admiration for the synth-pop group. 'Hot Chip is a group that we talked about and one that actually meant a lot to me as well,' he said. 'I remember getting the CD in, I think, 2007 and listening to it obsessively. And the fact that we landed on them, and were able to get them to come out and play, there was just a meta level to what we were doing. So that was so exciting when [creator Lee Sung Jin] said, “It’s happening.”'
The musical moment stems from a conversation in episode three, where Isaac's character and Carey Mulligan's character discuss seeing Hot Chip open for LCD Soundsystem at the Hollywood Bowl — a detail drawn from creator Lee Sung Jin's own life. Lee explained to Netflix's Tudum: 'If you listen, it’s such a poppy, fun song, and I’ve danced to it at so many music festivals. But when you actually listen to the lyrics, especially within the context of what this millennial couple is going through, it’s pretty sad. That felt like a fun song for Oscar to perform with Hot Chip when he goes to Troy’s chalet.'
Hot Chip's Al Doyle also shared the band's perspective on the collaboration: 'We got our make up, hair and wardrobe sorted, and headed over to glitzy Los Angeles to see our friend Oscar Isaac and help him get his synthesiser working. An honour to be part of this project, hope you all enjoy watching!'
The second season of Beef is streaming now on Netflix.
