Piastri: Verstappen Leaving F1 Would Be a 'Big Loss' for the Sport

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has expressed concern that Max Verstappen's departure from Formula 1 would be detrimental to the sport's image, following the four-time world champion's recent hints at leaving.

Speaking ahead of the upcoming Miami Grand Prix, Piastri emphasized the importance of retaining top talent like Verstappen, who has been the benchmark in Formula 1 over the past half-decade.

"I think it would be a shame for the sport to lose Max, especially at this point in his career. He has shown his calibre in the last 10 years, and especially in the last five or six, he's been the benchmark. For everyone it would be a pretty big shame and obviously not a great look," Piastri said.

Verstappen, 28, recently admitted he was "not enjoying the whole formula" due to changes in engine regulations this season. With a best finish of sixth in the first three races, the Red Bull driver has been considering his future and has even competed in sports car racing.

His teammate and reigning champion Lando Norris echoed Piastri's sentiments, acknowledging Verstappen's right to choose his path while hoping he remains in F1.

"Max has earned the right to go and do whatever he wants. He's won four World Championships, and he's always been that guy. It would be a shame for us because, as much as he makes our lives incredibly tough at times, he's always good fun to race against," Norris said.

In response to the concerns, Formula 1 has implemented a series of rule changes aimed at addressing the issues with the new engine regulations, with most set to take effect at the Miami Grand Prix from May 1-3.
