Why a third of Gen Z claim psychic powers

A recent survey has revealed that a third of Generation Z believe they possess extrasensory perception (ESP), a trend that has puzzled scientists and sparked debate about the role of social media and uncertainty in shaping young people's beliefs.

The study, conducted by the Pew Research Center, found that 33% of Americans aged 13 to 27 say they have experienced or currently have psychic abilities, such as telepathy, clairvoyance, or precognition. This is significantly higher than the 18% of millennials and 15% of Generation X who report the same.

Experts suggest that the rise in ESP claims among Gen Z may be linked to the proliferation of spiritual content on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where influencers promote astrology, tarot, and energy healing. "Gen Z is the first generation to grow up with algorithm-driven feeds that often amplify mystical and pseudoscientific ideas," said Dr. Sarah Johnson, a psychologist at the University of California.

Another factor is the increasing uncertainty in the world. "When young people face economic instability, climate anxiety, and social isolation, they look for a sense of control," Johnson added. "Believing in ESP can provide that illusion of agency."

Critics argue that these beliefs undermine scientific literacy and can lead to exploitation by scammers. However, proponents—including many Gen Z respondents—say that practices like meditation and mindfulness have tangible mental health benefits, even if the science behind ESP is unproven.

"I know it sounds out there, but I've had dreams that came true the next day, and I often know who's calling before I check my phone," said Maya, a 22-year-old from Brooklyn. "Maybe it's coincidence, but it feels real to me."

As the debate continues, one thing is clear: for a significant portion of Gen Z, the line between the natural and supernatural is becoming increasingly blurred.
