Microsoft's gaming division is undergoing a strategic overhaul under new leadership. In a joint memo obtained by The Verge, Asha Sharma, the newly appointed Xbox CEO, and Chief Content Officer Matt Booty laid out their vision for the future, centered on daily active players and four key pillars: hardware, content, experience, and services.
"Players are frustrated," the memo admits, acknowledging that "new feature drops on console have been less frequent" and that Xbox's presence has lagged. The leaders pledge to reverse this trend, promising a renewed focus on delivering consistent updates, expanding cross-platform play, and investing in exclusive content.
Sharma and Booty emphasize that Xbox will be judged by engagement metrics rather than just console sales. "We Are Xbox," they declare, signaling a unified identity across devices and services. The memo highlights plans to enhance the Game Pass ecosystem, improve backward compatibility, and foster stronger relationships with developers.
"Our goal is to make Xbox the best place to play, no matter what device you're on," the memo states. This includes pushing forward with cloud gaming, integrating AI-driven features, and ensuring that first-party titles launch day-one on Game Pass.
"We're not just building a console; we're building a community," the executives write.
The strategy marks a significant pivot from previous years, aiming to recapture the innovation that defined early Xbox generations. Sharma and Booty call on all employees to embrace this mission, concluding, "Together, we will write the next chapter of Xbox."
