YouTube Rolls Out Audio-First 'On-the-Go Mode' for Podcasts, But Only for Premium Users

YouTube is taking a small but significant step toward becoming a proper podcast platform with a new listening mode designed for audio-focused consumption. The feature, called "on-the-go mode," is rolling out to Premium subscribers starting today on Android, with iOS support coming later.

When activated, the mode transforms the video interface into an audio-first layout: playback buttons become larger and simplified, the video is replaced by a static image, and a timeline shows video chapters for easy navigation. YouTube says the mode can be turned on manually from the video's settings menu, and a prompt will appear automatically if the platform detects that you are moving while watching a video.

The update is part of a broader effort to make YouTube more appealing to podcast listeners, who often prefer audio-only playback and simpler controls. However, the feature is limited to Premium subscribers, which may frustrate free-tier users who want a similar experience.

This move signals YouTube's growing interest in the podcast space, but critics note that the company still has a long way to go before it can compete with dedicated podcast apps like Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Pocket Casts.
