Epic Games is taking a big step toward making its metaverse dream a reality. At Unreal Fest 2026, the company announced that with the upcoming Unreal Engine 6, players may soon be able to use their Fortnite skins and items across multiple games.

The feature, part of Epic's long-standing vision for an interoperable digital ecosystem, would allow gamers to carry their purchased cosmetics—like outfits, back bling, and emotes—into other titles built on Unreal Engine 6. This could break down the traditional walled gardens of gaming, where items are locked to a single game.

"We believe players should own their digital identity and purchases," said an Epic representative. "Unreal Engine 6 is built to support cross-game asset sharing."

While the exact implementation and timeline remain unclear, the announcement signals Epic's commitment to building a connected metaverse—a concept CEO Tim Sweeney has championed for years. Early test integrations are expected later this year.

For now, Fortnite remains the centerpiece of Epic's ecosystem, but Unreal Engine 6 could expand its reach far beyond one game.
